Improving Balance and Reducing Dizziness
Vestibular Rehabilitation or balance training is a specific type of therapy that is designed to reduce dizziness, improve balance, and improve the general quality of life in patients with vestibular dysfunction. People with vestibular problems may experience symptoms such as blurred vision, a sense of spinning, poor balance, motion sensitivity, nausea, and vomiting.
Vestibular Rehabilitation Treatment and Causes
Our licensed physical therapists have been specifically trained in vestibular rehabilitation and will conduct a wide range of tests to determine the most appropriate type of physical therapy intervention.
Causes of balance problems include:
- Muscle weakness
- Joint stiffness and decreased movement
- Inner ear problems
- Certain medicines (such as those prescribed for depression and high blood pressure)
- Lack of physical activity or too much sitting
- Simple aging
Balance problems also can be caused by medical conditions, such as:
- Stroke
- Parkinson disease
- Multiple sclerosis
- Traumatic brain injuries
- Arthritis
- Spinal cord injuries
- Cognitive diseases
- Diabetes
Vestibular Rehabilitation
One of our therapists will conduct a complete evaluation of your vestibular function as well as your ability to utilize the three primary systems (visual, sensation, and vestibular) that contribute to balance and postural control. You may experience dizziness during the evaluation, but this will help us determine the most appropriate physical therapy intervention.
Once we have completed the evaluation, our therapists will design a physical therapy intervention that is specific to your individual needs. This intervention may include simple exercises to be performed at home and will include the therapist taking you through some very specific movements in the clinic.
